Is there a way to prevent Cortana from coming up in the alt tab order?

Hi all,

As promised, the next Windows 10 development briefing is below. Due to happenings with 19H2, this might be the final one for that release – the next notice will be screen reader compatibility notices (well, there might not be one, seeing that anything compatible with 1903 will work with 1909 with small changes).

Note: yesterday, a small number of Windows Insiders on release preview ring received a Version 1909 test build (yes, 19H2 = 1909 after all). However, development is still ongoing, made more complex by the fact that although slow ring Insiders are on 1909, many of them are not seeing new features yet.

Windows 10 development briefing for August 2019

Builds: 18965 (fast ring), 18362.xxxxx (slow ring), 1836?.327 (release preview); note the question mark: either 18362 or 18363.

General:

  • Version: yes, 19H2 will be Version 1909.
  • Build range: at least 18363 for Version 1909, although that can change.
  • Only a subset of release preview Insiders are on 18363 with features turned off.

File Explorer and Windows shell:

  • Search experience in some 1909 builds are powered by newly revised Windows Search.
  • 20H1: you can now rename virtual desktops to anything you like (available for only a subset of fast ring Insiders).

Cortana and Search:

  • Some 20H1 Insiders will meet the new Cortana – completely different user interface.
  • If the new Cortana is in use, Cortana entry will be removed from Settings.
  • The new Cortana can be accessed from anywhere, even shows up in Alt+Tab order.

Action Center:

  • You can now ask Windows to not play the notification sound (available on 20H1 and for some 1909 Insiders).

Other changes:

  • Foundation has been laid to allow cloud restore feature – downloading latest Windows 10 build when resetting offline (not yet ready).

Few closing remarks:

  • Now that we know what 19H2 will show up as, a new hashtag will be activated next week once the forum transitions to Version 1909 preparation era. At that point, Insiders will let you know what to expect.
  • The next notice will be a general screen reader compatibility notice for Version 1909 (later in September).

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi,

19H2 – destined for second half of 2019. It wasn’t until this week that Insiders were notified as to what its YYMM ID would be – we won’t know its marketing name until later.

Cheers,

Joseph
